Learning about Learning

Who would’ve thought learning about learning required such concentration, openness, and time!

Lets break that statement down:

CONCENTRATION

Concentrating on the different perspectives of the definition of learning was not a piece of cake. I had to understand and absorb the different elements and characteristics of learning to see similarities, observe what fundamentally defines learning, and generate the definition. Although, I’m not here to complain.

From this hardship, I learned that instead of turning on the TV for background music while studying is not effective. Studying in the quiet and cold lobby of the condominium made me more engaged with the lessons and readings. I also heard from the TV show Brain Games that “unless we have two brains, humans are just bad at multitasking.”

I thought defining learning was not going to be difficult, but it proved me wrong as I now know that even the simplest thing as the definition of learning can be so complex and multi-purposeful.

OPENNESS

From the warm up activity, Keyword and Personal Definition, I had a quite concrete personal definition of learning. This caused me to be in quite a pickle while learning about learning.

I realized that reading different perspectives of the definition of learning was quite hard to do since I did not want to let go or reform my definition. I then thought of thinking of my definition as completely wrong and false in order to absorb and consider the many definitions of learning. Which oddly worked.

I guess thinking that you are wrong is one way to be open-minded to other perceptions and opinions.

TIME

I did an oopsie (as PewDiewPie calls a mistake) that turned out to be very helpful.

I was opening and reading the resources embedded in the module. After reading the last resource of a unit, I checked the module again and saw that the resources I just read were just choices that I had to ‘Choose One’ from (oopsie!).

It was an oopsie since I was behind on the prefered schedule and had to read and comprehend as quick as possible. However, if I did not overlook the instruction, I would not have known that it is better to read every resource to compare and contrast to give me the confidence to make correct judgments and have a concrete perception to the closest possible general definition of learning.

Hence, I implore and encourage you to read all the resources under the “Choose One” instruction. You may not gain more time but you most definitely will gain more knowledge and, most importantly, confidence to answering class discussions.

In Summary…

  • I need complete focus to completely understand information.
  • Being open to all readings and information is critical to making proper judgments.
  • The more time allotted or given to study, the better the quality of generative approaches of learning (i.e. answering T.I.D.’s and assignments).
  • Something as simple as learning acquires not only newfound knowledge, but also soft skills and realizations along the learning process that will help in future learning.

However, learning about learning showed me that it is important to consider every aspect of each distinct learner’s needs. There is no one best way to learning or teaching. It is best to understand all types of, preferences to and approaches to learning to be flexible in educating and guiding all types of learners.
